When it rains , it pours

Very unusual post this is. Yes, posting about surplussing of water in chennai and Tamil Nadu is not an everyday occurrance. There is water released from Andhra and it is overflowing in Kandaleru. The farmers along the canal in Andhra pradesh are not busy tapping off from the banks; reason is obvious; they have copious supplies themselves and dont need to siphon off water illegally. So water from telugu ganga is crossing Kandaleru and pouring into Poondi. Some time back it used to be a big joke about telugu ganga water reaching Chennai. Everyday newspapers will announce that high level talks with chief minister/water ministers/water secretaries of both the states have agreed to release water. But the same story will be rehashed for days on end with some photos now and then. But not a drop of water will enter Tamil Nadu. A new word was coined; zero point. water has reached zero point headlines will scream. But still no water to poondi reservoir. We were told there were seepages along the canal(isnt it a basic requirement of any canal, that it should convey water to the destination and not allow seepages.)Various excuses were given;farmers were siphoning off the water; the parched lands in Tamil nadu has soaked up the water... so on and so forth. It was almost like a crime thriller!
In this background, read the post from the beginning to 'soak' in the happy tidings.Veeranam lake has also received copious waters from catchment areas.Excess water stands released from mettur reservoir and all along the canal, flood alert has been sounded. Arey, flood alert along mettur, not heard of for a while.Karnataka and tamil nadu governments used to have interesting meetings to agree to release 1 cubic cc of water to mettur not so long back; Sambha crop is withering;it will be terribly late for kuruvai crop used to be the pleas from tamil nadu. Like sholay's amjad khan, "are oh sambha and are oh kuruvai" were not potent weapons in the hands of the state!what a pity.
So to cut a long story short, there is water water everywhere and lots to drink!Chennai is experiencing wet spells.Travelling is a pain.So dont travel, curl up with a crime thriller, lots of fried verkadalai and order for garam chai.BLISS

It is good to know that for once there is no water problem in chennai. I know there will be water logging problem. Some how I always love rains, may be because I spent quite a few years in Kerala and Malaysia where rain is a part of our life. Both in Kerala and Malaysia the soil structure is such that even with so much rains, the moment one sunny day comes the whole place will become absolutely dry.
My maid in kerala commented once that the kerala type rains might submerge whole of chennai. when my husband heard the comments he said what she says is partly true as the soil in chennai can not absorb as much water as the soil in kerala. May be that is why we see such a pathetic situation in chennai after each wet spell.

I wonder if it is the wet-cycle of the global el nino/la nina weather change pattern.
You should try to watch The Day After Tomorrow. Nice movie on what might happen if there was indefinite weather change.

By the way, did you know that human beings have actually survived through an ice age? I got to know this after talking about the movie!

Talking of survival, a 80 year old lady survived under the debris in the kashmir earthquake for 15 days!We do know of tenacity of 80 year olds nearer home, but this one is really remarkable.
