Say no to light pollution

Took the night sky and the stars and the moon for granted. Till yasaswini told me one day casually about not being able to see the stars and the inky blue/black sky due to light pollution in Singapore! It was this comment which flashed across my mind when i read today about the new regulation being proposed in New York.Lights on top of skyscrapers in Manhattan have to be switched off by midnight. But why? So that migratory birds are not hindered in their flight path.It appears that they get attracted to the bright lights like moths and crash against the buildings, and thereby killing or maiming them. So, as a measure to enable migratory birds, these lights will be switched off in the city which is said to have never switched off its lights ever!
This round the migratory birds have won!

You know in Tuscon, Arizona where Anand did his masters, the skys are so nice to watch. They have such clear sky, it appears as if it is much nearer to us all those bright stars. So they have a lighing system which is
unobtrusive to the night sky and all the street lights are dim and point towards the road there by enhancing the stars and the sky. Only last week we were talking how the lights here are hindering us to see the stars unlike tuscon. nice word light pollution. it is indeed a pollution

remember years back been to mudukkur to a farmhouse.stayed a night there. The sky appeared really like a big dome and stars were strewn across by the millions;tiny ones which you can spot if you keep peering long and hard enough.then little brighter ones and some more and some more.we sat out and simply drank in the canopy of stars.the scene is still etched deeply.Yasaswini,i remember asked me why these stars are not visible in chennai? Why not indeed?
